WEB HOSTING GLOSSARY

CGI-bin - A CGI bin (or Common Gateway Interface) is a directory found on web servers that allows the use of .cgi and .pl files. CGI scripts/files are used for statistics, guestbooks, response forms and databases.

CHMOD - is a set of rights assigned to a file. Scripts and files can be chmoded for reading, writing, executing, or a combination of all of these.

cPanel - is a common web control panel designed to help you manage and control all functions related to web hosting from email addresses to ftp accounts, parking and domain name routing.

Domain Name - A domain name is a set of alphanumeric characters followed by .com, .net, .org, .info or any other top-level extension. 'globehosting.com' is an example of a domain name.

DNS - Domain Name System is a translation between domain names and IP addresses that allows viewing your website online.

FTP - or File Transfer Protocol is the easiest and safest way to transfer files over the Internet. Using an FTP program you will be able to transfer files from your computer to your hosting account, under security conditions.

IMAP - or Internet Message Access Protocol is a method of accessing email or newsgroup messages that are stored on a server. Using IMAP you can download emails and messages from newsgroups to your local computer, keeping a copy on the server.

Dedicated IP - represents an IP address reserved for a single hosting account, not being shared with other users.

BANDWIDTH - is the measure of the data transfer capacity that can be provided for your website by the server where it is hosted. Typically, bandwidth is measured monthly.

SQL databases are usually used to store information such as forum messages, news, guestbook comments, review results and many others.

Nameservers - (eg: ns11.globehosting.net, ns12.globehosting.net) are actually addresses, just like your home address, that direct your domain to the appropriate server for hosting so that when someone accesses your URL the website should be displayed correctly in the browser. Each domain must be assigned two nameservers by your hosting service provider.

Parking domains - Parking a domain means hosting it on a server, under conditions already configured for another domain. Basically, both domains will play the same content.

POP - or Post Office Protocol represents the standard for email messages stored in your hosting account. POP technology allows you to retrieve messages from your hosting account and download them to your local computer via email software.

SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol represents the standard for the transport of email messages from host to host. SMTP servers control all emails sent from the hosting account of a specific domain.

SSL - Secure Socket Layer generates an encrypted link between a website and a client's browser. The communication between the two is encrypted, the information being thus protected from possible interceptions.

The URLs of secure sites that use SSL will start with https://, which confirms that the site is secure.

Subdomain - A subdomain is an address that functions below the top-level address. Subdomains are easy-to-remember addresses that serve as extensions of the top-level domain name. A subdomain has the form: any.mydomain.com

URL - A URL (or Uniform Resource Locator) is a web address that can be typed into the browser. By typing the address www.edomenii.ro in your Internet browser, you will be directed to the Globehosting.com website

Webmail - Webmail is an Internet address associated with your hosting account, from where you can send and read messages, instead of downloading them to your local computer.

WHM - WebHost Manager is a control panel that allows you to manage several domains. WHM is usually used by resellers of webhosting services and by owners of several domains hosted on the same server.
